Reports from French newspaper Lequipe (via SportWitness) have stated that West Ham United are interested in signing Marseille winger Florian Thauvin.
On the surface, Thauvin seems like he would be a fantastic signing for the London club. He has an incredible goalscoring record over in France, netting 38 goals in the past two seasons, and he seems ready to make the step over the channel to play in the Premier League.
The only problem is that we have already seen the Frenchman in the English top-flight, and he wasn’t very good.
Of course, the point could be made that he wasn’t utilised in the right way during his time at St James’ Park and it would be different this time around, but the fact of the matter is that when he plays at a higher level with his national team, similar trends of form arise. He has scored just one goal in 10 appearances for France, and that strike came against poor opposition as he netted against Andorra in a 3-0 win.
It’s a testament to the weak level of Ligue 1 that Thauvin is one of the most potent marksmen in the league rather than any indication that the winger is one of the most talented players in the world. A look at the top scorers list last season tells you all you need to know. Radamel Falcao hit 15 goals despite flopping massively in the Premier League, and Wahbi Kazhri netted 13 times despite being poor at Sunderland in England.
The aforementioned players scored eight goals in 74 appearances in England, yet they are now two of the most prolific scorers in France. The French league allows players who aren’t cut out for English football to flourish, and West Ham shouldn’t be fooled by Thauvin.
