Tottenham Hotspur were defeated 1-0 by Newcastle on Sunday to make it only four wins in their last 15 Premier League games, and it looks like they have some serious problems.
There are rumours of discontent within the squad, and even Mauricio Pochettino has cut a frustrated figure all summer due to the lack of transfer business from the club.
He even claimed that he was now just a coach – as he had no say in who the club bought in.
Transfer deadline day saw Spurs sign Giovani Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon, but a lot of fans are still unhappy.
Another problem appears to be contract situations with three of Tottenham’s best players.
Christian Eriksen has a year of his contract to run and has openly admitted he wants to leave Spurs.
Jan Vertonghen has asked for improved terms, but he has heard nothing back from the club and Toby Aldeweireld’s contract is also up soon.
As a result of these situations, Eriksen has only started one of Spurs’ three Premier League games so far, and Vertonghen has had to watch every game from the stands – these two decisions have not gone down well with a lot of Spurs fans.
On Sunday Tottenham were missing Tanguy Ndombele and Dele Alli due to injury, but a team with Heung-min Son, Harry Kane, Lucas Moura, Erik Lamela, and Eriksen should have had more than enough to prevail over a Newcastle side lacking confidence.
Instead, though Spurs moved the ball slowly and only tested Martin Dubravka twice in the Newcastle goal.
Once the Toon went 1-0 up there was no injection of urgency and Spurs just let the game slip away.
For a team that saw themselves as title challengers this year – it was a pathetic result, and many fans were rightly fuming.
It certainly looks like Tottenham have some significant issues to deal with, or they could struggle this year.
