Liverpool midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri has been ruled out of Liverpool’s Carabao Cup tie with MK Dons after suffering a further injury setback.

The 27-year-old was assessed by the club’s medical team on Monday after he picked up a knock during training and was deemed unfit to play in the domestic cup tie at Stadium MK.

Shaqiri is yet to start a game this season for Liverpool and has only played 11 minutes of Premier League football so far, featuring briefly against Newcastle United and Burnley.

Liverpool’s official website confirmed that his calf muscle stiffened up and a further scan showed a slight tear so the Switzerland international will not be involved.

Reds’ fans have been reacting with disappointment on Twitter after the club posted the article on the social media website. One fan said that Shaqiri “can’t catch a break” in the side after his latest injury hitch.

Another supporter commented that Shaqiri is “the new Sturridge” and that he is gutted for him as he would have played the full 90 minutes.
