Tottenham Hotspur have sent scouts to Denmark’s Nations League fixtures this week, with the club rumoured to be interested in Atalanta full-back Joakim Mæhle.

The Lowdown: Well known across Europe

Mæhle first brought himself to the attention of UK viewers, after his extremely impressive performances at Euro 2020 last summer.

The £12.6m-rated man is capable of playing on both sides as a full-back and wing-back and has been a regular for Atalanta since signing for the club in January 2021.

The Latest: Spurs scouting

According to Ekstra Bladet (via SportWitness), Spurs scouts were in attendance at Denmark’s 2-1 Nations League victory in Austria to watch both Mæhle and former player Christian Eriksen.

According to the same report, the Lilywhites retain an interest in the player, despite his struggles at Atalanta this season.

The verdict: May be better options out there

Despite being described as a “monster” by Maikel Bill, the 25-year-old has had an inconsistent season in Serie A this campaign, and Antonio Conte might feel he can attract higher calibre players to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for next season’s Premier League and Champions League campaign.

Spurs have some better options already at the club in the full-back/wing-back department, with Matt Doherty providing two goals and four assists in just nine Premier League starts this season, compared to Mæhle’s one goal and one assist, according to FBref.

Sergio Reguilón also has a better productivity rate according to the same stats provider, having scored two and assisted three in the Premier League this season, suggesting that Conte has better options on both sides in terms of attacking output.

In terms of a defensive option, Conte may look to Emerson Royal who has won 42 of his attempted 90 tackles according to FBref, which again is a significantly better output than the Danish international (24 from 16), which suggests that the Atalanta full-back may struggle to adapt to the punishing nature of the Premier League.

Mæhle’s SofaScore rating of 6.56 for this Serie A season suggests that he has had a below-par campaign, with the success of his Euro 2020 performances fading off into the distant memory.

Though the Dane is far from a poor player, Conte may feel that he has better options already at the club in terms of full-backs, and may want to bring in someone who has had a much more consistent campaign than the 27-time Danish international.
