Tottenham Hotspur are interested in former Everton and Watford winger Gerard Deulofeu.

That is according to Corriere dello Sport, who say that both Spurs and Napoli are interested in the current Udinese winger.

The report comes with Spurs already having an incredibly strong department out wide, with Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski enjoying strong campaigns at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

With the latter’s loan at Spurs yet to be made permanent for Antonio Conte’s side, let’s take a look at the two wide men.

Dejan Kulusevski

After arriving at the club on an 18-month loan on January’s winter transfer deadline day, Kulusevski has been nothing short of a hit for Conte’s side.

The £31.5m-rated dynamo made 20 appearances for Spurs last season, scoring five goals and providing eight assists in that time, according to Transfermarkt.

The 25-time Sweden international ranks highly against his fellow attacking midfielders/wingers in Europe’s top five leagues for assists per 90 minutes in the 2021/22 season, being in the top 2% (0.47) according to FBref.

He is also willing to work hard defensively for the team, ranking in the top 3% of attacking midfielders/wingers for pressures, and the top 4% for interceptions, according to the same stats provider.

The 6 foot 1 superstar is rated highly by reporter Alasdair Gold, who gave the winger a rating of 9/10 following his Premier League final day brace at Norwich City.

“Should have had an assist just eight minutes after beating two men down the right before crossing for Højbjerg in plenty of space,” said Gold.

“Grabbed a goal instead on 16 minutes, slotting home from six yards from Bentancur’s pass.

“Both January signings [Kulusevski and Bentancur] made their mark when it mattered.”

A SofaScore rating of 7.21 for his Premier League performances this season suggest that Kulusevski has been superb when called upon by Conte this season.

Gerard Deulofeu

Deulofeu has enjoyed a stunning season in Italy, scoring 13 goals and providing five assists in 35 appearances for Udinese according to Transfermarkt, which is the exact same amount of goal involvements that Kulusevski provided for both Juventus and Spurs over the 2021/22 season.

And the £13.5m-rated winger’s goals per 90 minutes for the 2021/22 season (0.45) rank better than that of his Swedish counterpart (0.27) according to FBref, which might indicate that the 28-year-old may be a more reliable presence in front of goal.

However, the four-time Spanish international isn’t quite as helpful in a defensive sense, winning just nine tackles, and making a combined 43 tackles and interceptions during the 2021/22 season compared to his opposite number, who won 27 and made a combined total of 78 tackles and interceptions, according to the same stats provider.

One of Deulofeu’s most famous goals was in a 3-2 FA Cup semi-final victory over Wolves, which was described as “exquisite” by former England international and current Match of the Day host Gary Lineker.

The 5 foot 8 winger has earned himself an average SofaScore rating of 7.18 for his performances in Serie A this season, suggesting he has had a scintillating campaign.

Our verdict

We believe that whilst Deulofeu has proved himself to be a consistent top-level performer throughout the last season, we believe that Spurs are better off signing Kulusevski to a permanent deal.

The Swede is six years junior to his opposite number, suggesting that he hasn’t reached his full potential yet, whilst the Spanish winger may have already reached his peak.

Whilst Deulofeu may be a good option for Conte should he want a back-up, we believe that signing Kulusevski for the rumoured £29.2m would be the way forward for Spurs in this instance, so to waste funds on the former Watford flop would certainly be a big mistake to make.
