Chris Wilder is currently trying to assemble his squad for Sheffield United’s long-awaited return to the Premier League – so far, he has added Luke Freeman, Callum Robinson, Ravel Morrison and, perhaps more importantly, Phil Jagielka.

The 36-year-old is returning to Bramall Lane after 12 years with Everton; he now has bags of Premier League experience which could be vital for the Blades.

In a season where they are expected to struggle, they will need all of the experience they can get, and there are not many players around with as much knowledge as Jagielka – who has  385 Premier League appearances, has played for England on 40 occasions and also featured in the Europa League for the Toffees.

At 36 Jagielka fell out of favour with Marco Silva and was released in May – this was because Silva preferred Michael Keane and Kurt Zouma as his centre back pairing.

Jagielka is seen to be past his best to play a club like Everton but for a newly promoted side that needs some Premier League experience, he could be perfect – that is the view from a lot of Everton fans anyway.

Wilder, though, was delighted to bring Jagielka back to the club where he started his career and will be hoping that the Manchester-born man can make a telling contribution this season.

Jagielka himself is relishing the challenge and cannot wait to get started and try to keep the Blades in the Premier League; he knows it will be tough, but if he can use his experience and knowledge of the Premier League then the Blades may have an advantage over their relegation rivals.

Time will tell, but Jagielka could be one of the coups of the summer.
