Earlier this summer David Ornstein reported that Arsenal have been trying to sell Shkodran Mustafi nearly every transfer window since they bought him. The German international cost the club in excess of £35m in a move from Spanish side Valencia that has gone catastrophically for the player. Fresh reports that the club is looking to sell Mustafi have been met with the same outcome, that no one wants to even entertain the idea of signing the player. This does not surprise many Arsenal fans who have seen Mustafi struggle to get to grips with the Premier League since joining the club.

The exit of the German this summer was meant to raise some much-needed funds to reinforce the defensive personnel at the Emirates, but the recent developments regarding club captain Laurent Koscielny have left the club in a sticky situation. If Koscielny gets his wish and returns to France, it will leave Arsenal with five senior centre backs. However, Rob Holding is injured, Mavropanos is inexperienced at the top level, and Calum Chambers is reportedly part of a player-plus-cash deal for Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha. The Gunners have been linked with French youngster William Saliba, but he would be loaned back to St Etienne for a season as part of the deal, that is if Spurs do not highjack the agreement as reported.
