“When the club had ambition” – A lot of Newcastle fans are reminiscing about the day they signed Alan Shearer for a world-record fee of £15m.
It was on this day 23 years ago that the Toon bought Shearer from Blackburn Rovers – as they attempted to win the Premier League title.
The post from Newcastle’s Twitter account, however, has just made a lot of fans realise how much has changed at their football club in that time.
Back then Newcastle were competing for trophies and in European competitions – now they are just happy to stay in the Premier League.
The Toon have so far made one signing this summer – and they are apparently struggling to bring anyone else in.
A lot of Newcastle fans have used this post about Shearer to vent their anger about the current situation.
See the best of the reaction below.

Back in the day when the club had passion, ambition and desire. Now a club happy to survive and make its owner money and free advertising. #AshleyOut
