Nottingham Forest have been urged to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White by pundit Darren Fletcher.

Steve Cooper’s side will have money to spend this summer after securing promotion to the Premier League following their 1-0 win against Huddersfield Town in the Championship Play-Off final on Sunday.

And it is no surprise that they have been linked with the Wolves youngster, who has just had an impressive season on loan at Sheffield United, notching up 12 goals and ten assists in the Championship during the 2021/22 campaign.

Now, speaking on the Garibaldi Red Podcast, the BT Sport commentator and Reds fan Fletcher claims that the youngster would make for a strong addition to Cooper’s squad.

He said:

“What I’m told is that a lot of big clubs like Morgan Gibbs-White so I think if Forest could get Morgan Gibbs-White and play him as a ten in the Zinckernagel position you’ve got a good player there.”

Our thoughts on Gibbs-White to Forest…

With a lot of Cooper’s side set to depart the City Ground in the summer, it will be a big opportunity for the club to make a statement in the transfer window, and their promotion will certainly help that.

As Fletcher alluded to, Zinckernagel will be one of the players, along with Max Lowe, Keinan Davis, Djed Spence, and James Garner, who will need replacing in the summer due to them being only in the East Midlands on loan, and Gibbs-White does seem to be an ideal replacement for the Dane.

And despite still only being 22 years old, the playmaker’s experience of playing 46 times in the Premier League will hold him in good stead going back into the top flight, and going into a side that doesn’t have much experience of game time in the division.

Forest can also take advantage of the Stafford-born star’s strong relationship with their boss Cooper, who has previously told The Star that the Welshman has helped a lot in his career. He said:

“Steve and I have always had a good relationship. He did unbelievable things for me in the World Cup with England and when he was at Swansea, he gave me my chance when I went on loan there”.

However, with Alan Nixon reporting, via Nottingham Forest News, that the Reds will have to pay upwards of £20m to beat Southampton and Leeds United to the signing of the England U21 international, they could perhaps look at other cheaper options, or once again look at who they can bring in on loan, as that is what helped them have such a successful campaign this season.

That being said, the success of youngsters such as Brennan Johnson and Spence under Cooper suggests that Gibbs-White would be a success at Forest, with former Blades teammate David McGoldrick claiming that the 22-year-old has “the world at his feet”.

And in other news, Marlon Harewood has offered his take on the future of Brennan Johnson…
