Newcastle United are set to make a move for Atletico Madrid’s Renan Lodi.
The Lowdown: looking at different options
Eddie Howe is looking at options for the left-back position on Tyneside, with Matt Targett filling the position thus far in the former Bournemouth boss’ team since joining on loan from Aston Villa.
However, it has been reported in The Telegraph in the past week that Targett is increasingly unlikely to sign a permanent deal at St. James’ Park, with The Northern Echo noting Fulham’s interest in the 26-year-old, with the full-back allegedly preferring a move down south.
This has opened the door to other potential options being looked at by the Magpies, with reports from Spain linking Lodi with a move away from the Wanda Metropolitano.
The Latest: release clause opens doors
According to reports in Mundo Deportivo, Newcastle have shown an interest in the Brazilian left-back, who has fallen out of favour at the LaLiga outfit following the club’s signing of Reinildo in February.
And despite still having three years left on his contract, the 24-year-old has a release clause of £51.1m, making him a more premium option on the left for clubs like Newcastle, but also an affordable price for cash injected sides.
He is a player who is reportedly sought after by many top European clubs according to Mundo Deportivo, with the Serrana native scheduled to meet with the Premier League outfit this week.
The Verdict: Bruno could help get it over the line
Lodi has been much admired since his move to Atletico Madrid in 2019, stepping in expertly after fellow Brazilian Filipe Luis’ departure that same summer.
And one of his biggest supporters has been his manager, Diego Simeone, who described him as “a hard-working, humble player who deserves all the praise and support”.
These characteristics that the Argentinian noted about his player suggests that the former Athletico Paranaense man would be a hit amongst the St. James’ Park faithful, in a similar vein to fellow Brazilian Bruno Guimaraes, who has been a revelation since his move to the North East in January, scoring five goals in 17 games in the Premier League as the team go from strength to strength under Howe.
Brazilian news source Jovem Pan Esportes have previously reported that Guimaraes, a former teammate of Lodi’s at Athletico Paranaense, may hold the key in persuading the full-back to join him on Tyneside, while the success of Kieran Trippier since he moved from Atletico Madrid could also be a determining factor in whether the 15-time Brazil international would be able to adapt in the famous black and white stripes.
In other news, Newcastle are also eager to sign another defender.
