Newcastle United are reportedly plotting a move for RB Leipzig star Christopher Nkunku following an impressive season in the Bundesliga.

The Lowdown- Bolstering attacking options

Eddie Howe is looking to bolster his options in the forward positions in his Newcastle side, and there has been a lot of speculation regarding on who their marquee signing is going to be.

With Allan Saint-Maximin proving to be a fans favourite on Tyneside, it would not be a surprise to see the Magpies sign another Frenchman in attack, with FC Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele and Stade de Reims’ Hugo Etikite amongst the names linked with a move to St. James’ Park.

And now yet another Frenchman’s name is reportedly one of Howe’s targets, with the in-demand Nkunku being touted as a potential acquisition.

The Latest- Touted but unlikely

Writing in The Telegraph, Luke Edwards claims that the £58.5m-rated forward is one of three ambitious targets that the Toon have in their sights as potential marquee signings, along with Benfica’s Darwin Nunez and Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips.

Edwards reports that, while a move is unlikely, they are keeping an eye on the 24-year-old’s situation, with RB Leipzig expecting a bidding war for their in demand star, with Chelsea the latest club reportedly after his signature, though journalist Florian Plettenberg has rubbished claims that Nkunku is to leave Germany this summer, saying that Leipzig won’t sell this window.

The Verdict- A great signing if they can get it done

There’s a reason why the former Paris Saint-Germain man is so in demand this summer, and that’s because he has a fantastic season which has garnered him praise from across the footballing world.

With 20 goals and 13 assists to his name in the Bundesliga this season, he has been one of the star players in Germany, and has caught the attention of France national team manager Didier Deschamps, who gave the marksman his first international cap in March against Ivory Coast.

This has seen him gain a fan in legendary striker Thierry Henry, who claimed to CBS Sports, via TEAMtalk, that he “loves watching [him] play”, praising his goal contributions and his confidence.

Considering the kind of numbers that Nkunku, who has been lauded as “unstoppable” by GOAL, has been racking up this season, he would undoubtedly be a great signing for Newcastle, especially if he can recreate that kind of form in a black and white shirt.

It would be a big ask, and would require an enormous bid for RB Leipzig to consider selling their breakout star, but with the kind of investment that they have at their disposal, it would be worth a try.

And in other news, Newcastle are considering a move for another player who has just had a breakthrough season…
