Newcastle United need to add to their one senior signing of the transfer window so far – with many positions in the squad needing to be strengthened.

However, in the centre of defence, they are solid with Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar, Florian Lejeune, Federico Fernandez, Paul Dummett and Ciaran Clark all able to play there.

It, therefore, seems possible that at least one of these players will be sold – and the one Newcastle would miss least is Clark.

Rafael Benitez signed the 29-year-old for around £5m from Aston Villa, and he has gone to make 72 appearances for the Toon – as well as scoring eight goals.

The Republic of Ireland international was signed for Newcastle’s Championship campaign – and quickly formed an excellent partnership with Lascelles.

Newcastle signed Lejeune in the summer of 2017, and on the opening day of the season, it was Lascelles who was benched and not Clark.

Benitez had been so impressed by Clark that he dropped his captain to fit the 29-year-old into the side.

In the second half of the season though the Spaniard favoured Lejeune and Lascelles – so Clark found his game time limited.

Last summer Newcastle added Fernandez from Swansea and Benitez moved Dummett into a centre back role – so Clark found game time even more hard to come by and overall, he only made 14 appearances last season. He did, however, pop up with three goals in that time.

Crystal Palace and Bristol City are supposedly interested in signing Clark – and selling him would be wise business from Newcastle because they have more than enough cover for the centre back positions.
