Newcastle are preparing a bid for Benfica forward Darwin Nunez.

The 22-year-old has announced himself in style this season, scoring 26 goals in just 28 league appearances for the Portuguese club.

His stunning domestic form has translated to the European stage this season, as he scored six goals in the Champions League to help his side reach the quarter-finals.

That run would include a brace against Barcelona and goals away at Bayern Munich, Ajax, and Liverpool.

The Uruguay international’s performances have naturally attracted the interest of Europe’s biggest clubs, but the Magpies are reportedly close to signing the £49.5m-rated finisher.

That’s according to Uruguayan journalist Sebas Giovanelli, who has reported that the Tyneside club are in a bigger war with Manchester United and that the two Premier League clubs are the closest to signing the 6 foot 2 target man.

With the Penarol Academy graduate’s contract expiring in 2025, Benfica know that they hold the power.

It would be a major statement of intent if Eddie Howe can bring the Primeira Liga Player of the Year to St James’ Park this summer.

The former Almeria attacker is more than a flat-track bully. His goal rate, progressive carries, and crosses In the Champions League alone would put him in the top 10% of all forwards in Europe’s top five leagues.
