Liverpool’s Allan Rodrigues de Souza – or just Allan incase you’ve never heard of him – has had his loan spell at Brazilian side Fluminense extended until December which has left some supporters baffled by the news.

You could be forgiven as a Liverpool fan for not knowing who Allan actually is as he’s never made an appearance for the club despite joining in 2015. Work permit issues have persisted with the 22-year-old meaning he’s unable to play for Liverpool even though he’s under contract.

The former Brazil under-20 international joined from Internacional for £500k and has been sent out on loan to six clubs – SJK, Sint-Truiden, Hertha Berlin, Apollon Limassol and Eintracht Frankfurt with Fluminese extending his loan for the rest of the year. Liverpool had hoped that his spell with Bundesliga side Frankfurt would finally grant him a permit to play in the Premier League though he only went on to make four appearances before returning to his home country.

Allan is a talented deep-lying midfielder who could one day replace 33-year-old James Milner but question marks will remain over whether he will ever play for the Champions League winners after a fourth straight year without a work permit.
