Red Bull Salzburg’s Ghanian left-back Gideon Mensah has 24 hours to decide whether he wants to join Celtic, according to Ghanasoccernet.com

What’s the story?

The Ghanian youth international has yet to make his debut for Salzburg. However, he did spend half of last season playing in the Austrian Bundesliga with Sturm Graz.  The 21-year-old played in 15 matches, amassing 1,228 minutes and he picked up four yellow cards.

And according to Ghanasoccernet, he is to be sent out on loan to gain first-team experience. He may yet have a future at Salzburg as he has a contract until 2024. In the coming days, however, Mensah is set to choose between Celtic and Belgian side Zulte Waregem.

Left-backs like buses

Mensah is the third left-back Celtic have been credited with an interest in over the last few days. They have already signed Boli Bolingoli from Rapid Vienna. And the move for Mensah comes hot on the heels of talk that they are interested in Greg Taylor of Kilmarnock and Birger Meling of Rosenborg.

Neil Lennon is certainly giving himself the best possible chance to replace Kieran Tierney and fill that problem left-back area. However, a move for Mensah may be one that is nothing more than a back-up option behind Taylor and Meling. Even more so, because Mensah has only had 15 matches in top-flight European football, while Meling’s and Taylor’s experience of top-flight competition is far more substantial and Lennon has a bigger sample size on which to judge those two players than he does to judge Mensah.

Unfortunately for Mensah, it’s that lack of experience that may see him miss out on a move to Celtic, even though it appears they are waiting on his answer.  By the time he gives it to them, they may have moved on and signed one of their top two targets.
