Manchester United are reportedly in direct contact with Barcelona for their Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
What’s the word?
That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who had the following to say about the potential transfer on his YouTube channel:
“I have an update for you after a check I had in the last few hours. Frenkie de Jong spoke in public in the last 24 hours and said again that he has no intention to leave Barcelona. But what I can tell you is that after some checks, Barcelona and Manchester United are in direct contact for Frenkie de Jong.
“There is still no official bid from Manchester United. They are still discussing, speaking, there is no official proposal yet. It could happen in the coming hours or days. For sure, Manchester United have intention to act soon for Frenkie de Jong. They really want to complete this transfer this summer. The fee, from what I’m told is around €85m (£72.4m). This could be the price tag to sign the Dutch midfielder.”
Fans should get excited
Manchester United have seemingly held an interest in de Jong since Ten Hag was confirmed as their new manager. Looking to reunite himself with one of his former Ajax stars, there was seemingly no movement to make the deal happen. However, following this revelation, it seems the Red Devils have finally made huge steps towards making this transfer a reality.
Money is often of no object to Manchester United, but the reported fee of £72.4m does represent good value in today’s market, given the players Transfermarkt valuation of £63m is not that much lower.
The 25-year-old has had a solid start to life in Catalonia, however has had to play under a number of different managers since he was first signed in 2019. Perhaps this unrest, and Barcelona’s long-reported financial troubles, could allow United to swoop in, despite the player claiming he has no plans to leave the club.
Barcelona’s current manager is clearly a big fan of the midfielder, as he dubbed him an “extraordinary footballer” way before he even became his manager. Since his arrival in the Camp Nou dugout, de Jong has enjoyed some fine performances. His 7.08 average SofaScore rating is indicative of a consistently solid performer; something which United have lacked in their engine room.
His eye for a pass is also something with the Red Devils could do with in a midfield that is packed with workmanlike individuals like Fred and McTominay, who lack that real star quality. De Jong ranks in the 94th percentile for progressive carries and averages a 90.1% pass completion per 90.
An explosive presence with the quality to create chances from deep is exactly what this Manchester United team has been lacking, and despite not seeming initially keen on the move, perhaps money, some assurances, and some sweet talking from his old boss could convince the magician to make the move to Manchester.
