Manchester United have already initiated contact with Benfica over their Uruguayan forward Darwin Nunez.

The Lowdown: Ten Hag’s first signing?

Erik Ten Hag was pictured taking in his first Manchester United game this weekend having left his role at Ajax early: a 1-0 away loss to Crystal Palace. He will instantly understand the task in front of him and reportedly is interested in making Nunez his first signing.

David Ornstein of The Athletic last month reported that Chelsea and PSG were also among the frontrunners to sign the £36m-rated striker, at a fee initially reported to be around €70m (£60m) but has since dropped in the region of €60m (£51m).

Now that Ten Hag is settling into his position at the helm of Manchester United, perhaps a statement signing is in store to provide Ronaldo with some youthful competition.

The Latest: United’s priorities lie with a striker

Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor, speaking to GIVEMESPORT, questioned where United’s priorities lie in the transfer market. He does suspect it is “probably a striker to help Ronaldo”.

“I do sort of question where United’s priorities lie; it’s probably a striker to help Ronaldo,” he said.

“So, Darwin Nunez, I know he’s a player definitely that United like, and they’ve initiated contact with Benfica and his agent to sort of gauge what kind of price tag would be enough to get him.”

The Verdict: Could learn from Ronaldo

If Nunez was to make the switch to Manchester United, he would be sure to learn a thing or two from one of the greatest strikers of all time in Cristiano Ronaldo.

As a man who also came to United from the Portuguese league as a youngster, Ronaldo’s advice for any activities off the field could prove just as useful for the 22-year-old.

Nunez boasts a remarkable 26 goals in 28 appearances for Benfica this season, with an average SofaScore rating of 7.48. These numbers outline an incredible talent, who after a season under Ronaldo’s wing could slowly start to displace him as the Red Devil’s starting forward.

Having been dubbed “brilliant” by former Premier League striker Kevin Campbell, the 6 foot 1 striker possesses the physicality to compete in the Premier League, but also the eye for goal that could replace the incredible numbers Ronaldo consistently delivers one day.

AND in other news, Manchester United have also been linked with a swoop for a highly-rated midfielder. Find out who here.
