Senior writer at ESPN Mark Ogden has had his say on the links between Manchester United and Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

The Dutchman’s links with United have intensified ever since Erik Ten Hag was confirmed as the new man in the Old Trafford dugout.

Having not had the perfect introduction to life at the Camp Nou, Manchester United could be looking to capitalise on Barcelona’s problematic finances with a big-money move for de Jong.

Midfield has long been a problem area for the Red Devils, and so Ten Hag has reportedly made it a matter of priority this summer.

Speaking on The United Stand, Mark Ogden questioned United’s pull in the market nowadays. He had this to say:

“I think if they could get de Jong it would be a sensational buy. They could maybe capitalise on Barcelona’s troubles right now financially.

“But they have to appeal to Frenkie de Jong and I think, United are a big club and one of the most famous in the world but they’re not a team that would attract a Champions League player right now.”

Our thoughts on Mark Ogden’s comments…

Although United are not the force they once were, arguably neither are Barcelona. Since 2020, the Catalan giants have been through four different managers, outlining the tumultuous period they are facing.

With Barcelona in huge financial trouble, as Ogden mentions, Manchester United could once again flex their financial muscle to attract another of the world’s biggest stars to Old Trafford.

With the Red Devils lacking a high-quality midfielder with a quality work ethic for some time, the £63m-rated maestro could be the answer they have been looking for. With an average SofaScore rating of 7.08, and sitting in the 94th percentile for progressive carries per 90, it paints the picture of a consistent midfielder who is always looking to move the ball forward.

Although United are not currently in the Champions League, perhaps a combination of the new manager having previously worked with the 25-year-old and a large financial incentive could persuade de Jong to make the move to United. His arrival could be the catalyst to propel the club back into Europe’s elite competition.

In other news, United are also linked with a centre back likened to Maldini. Find out who here.
