Wolves are set to miss out on one of their transfer targets this summer with Eredivisie giants Ajax in pole position to sign Mexican defender Edson Alvarez after meeting Club America’s €15m (£13.6m) asking price – which has left many fans at Molineux angry at his “lack of ambition” and the club’s inability to pay what’s required.

That’s according to MedioTempo who report that the deal is “95%” done as Alvarez will come in to replace the departing Matthijs de Ligt – The Dutch star is expected to join Serie A champions Juventus in the coming days.

The 21-year-old has cemented his place amongst the national side since making his debut in 2017 and played in defensive midfield during Mexico’s Gold Cup triumph earlier this month. He’s also able to operate on the right side of defence having played there for Club America since breaking into the first-team in 2016.

Last season he featured 46 times for the Copa MX champions, contributing towards 20 clean sheets with his presence in the team being often at centre-back or defensive midfield.

Many Wolves fans saw the young Mexican as a perfect option for them this season but his decision to head to the Eredivisie instead of the Premier League has left some supporters fuming at the player as well as the club – having not yet signed a single player this summer.
