Another weekend of football has come and gone, and Leeds United have picked up another three points.

A convincing 2-0 win away at Wigan Athletic leaves the Whites at the top of the Championship after three games, but there are still areas in which they need to improve.

It’s the same old story for United – their chance conversion is letting them down. Luckily this week they managed to get a win, but in the future they may not be as lucky.

Looking at the expected goals of both sides from the weekend shows that Leeds should have blown Wigan away, but instead, they only won 2-0.

Leeds had an xG of just over four, yet they only managed to find the back of the net twice.

They’re still severely underperforming in that area, and it could once again come back to bite them.

Just look at their meeting with Wigan from last season.

Late on in the 2018/19 season, the Whites met Wigan at Elland Road. The Latics were quickly reduced to ten men, and the Yorkshire club took an early lead.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men would go on to lose this game 2-1 despite only allowing two shots on target. The home side that day had 36 shots, but only one of them found the net.

This weekend they managed to score twice, but the reality is that they should have had more than that, putting the result beyond any doubt.

If they continue to squander opportunities at such a rate, top teams in this division will make them pay. Ultimately it could cost United a place in the top two once again.
