Former Everton striker Kevin Campbell claims that Frank Lampard will try to bring Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour to Goodison Park.

The Merseyside club have had a disappointing season, dropping from tenth in 2020-21 to battling relegation, eventually finishing in 16th.

The Toffees had the lowest average possession in the Premier League, only having 39.7% of the ball, which suggests that they need more control in the middle of the park.

With that in mind, there have been reports that Lampard is looking to sign a midfielder this summer, with options such as Chelsea’s Gilmour, Conor Gallagher, and Tottenham’s Harry Winks.

Sky Sports pundit Campbell is backing Gilmour to be the Everton boss’ number one’s priority.

“I’ve seen enough from Billy Gilmour, knowing that he’s such a young lad, but he plays with such a maturity to his game.

“I think what Frank Lampard’s trying to do is obviously get somebody in that centre of the park who can dictate the tempo of a game.

“And Billy Gilmour’s done that. He’s done that for Chelsea. I’ve seen him do it at times for Norwich, and I’ve seen him do it for Scotland.

“So is it something that he [Lampard] might pursue? Yeah, he might pursue it, that’s for sure.

“Obviously that Chelsea knowledge might allow him to go and get a couple of players who maybe everybody doesn’t know about.”

Our Thoughts on Campbell’s Gilmour Claims

The 21-year-old has spent the previous campaign on loan at Norwich, and the stats suggest that he can be the player to boost the Blues’ possession.

The Scotland international is in the top three for the Canaries in key passes, passes per game, and pass accuracy.

The £10.8m-rated youngster is seen to have a lot of potential in him. His performance against Liverpool in the FA Cup for Chelsea led to Roy Keane calling him “fantastic”.

“From his performance the other night, he was fantastic.

“As the game started I literally got out of my seat, which I very rarely do, and I thought, ‘Who is this kid?’

“There are certain traits you want from a midfielder, quality on the ball, football intelligence, composure.

“He had everything, it was one of the best performances I have seen in a long, long time.”

No player at Goodison Park has made more progressive passes per 90 minutes than the Cobham Academy graduate, and, out of all players that have made more than 15 league appearances, only Allan at Everton has made more pressures per 90 minutes.

Lampard would therefore be making a great signing if can lure Gilmour away from Chelsea.
