As Chelsea touched down in Japan for the next stage of their pre-season schedule, the squad-list for the mini two-game tour was released. Amongst the 24-strong squad were first-team stars N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and David Luiz but one notable absentee originally caused confusion for some supporters before manager Frank Lampard spoke on the matter this morning.

Promising central defender Ethan Ampadu only featured for 45 minutes in Chelsea’s opening friendly against Bohemians last week and wasn’t on the flight to Asia late yesterday – but it’s all for good measure as Lampard revealed in his press conference today that the 18-year-old will be loaned out this summer in the hope he gets regular game time.

The news of Ampadu’s absence at first had many fans questioning where he was but following their manager’s comments they are now heaping praise on the club legend. Many see a loan move for the former Exeter City starlet as the ideal scenario as it is unlikely he can break into the squad ahead of the likes of Luiz, Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen or even Fikayo Tomori.

Lampard admitted that he wanted to sign Ampadu for Derby County last season so it is possible that the centre-back heads to the Championship this time around to pursue regular first-team opportunities. The Wales international signed a new long-term contract at the club last September and has featured 12 times for the senior side.
