Newcastle United are closing in on signing Reims striker Hugo Ekitike.

The Lowdown: Breakthrough Season

Before this campaign, the 19-year-old had only played two appearances for the French club, fresh off of a loan spell at Danish club Vejle Boldklub.

This year has seen the France U20 international burst onto the scene, though, scoring ten goals in 24 Ligue 1 appearances.

His rapid rise can be seen in his market value, which has increased from £540k in June 2021 to currently being worth £25.2m.

The Latest: Deal Almost Done

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that the Magpies are looking to complete the deal for the teenager this week.

“More on Ekitike deal. Newcastle now hope to get the deal done this week after new contact with his agent – talks on player side will continue with all partied now confident again,” he tweeted.

An agreement has been made between the clubs, and the Tyneside club are currently negotiating with the player’s representatives.

Eddie Howe was close to signing the player in January in a £33m deal, but the player rejected the move in order to stay at the club until the summer.

The Verdict: Huge Potential

The 6 foot 2 striker has been one of the standout players in Ligue 1 this year.

Only Kylian Mbappe and Lyon’s Moussa Dembele has scored more non-penalty goals than the Reims-born attacker.

His ten league goals would make him top scorer at Newcastle, and his goalscoring exploits has caused journalist Lee Davey to praise the potential move as a “signing of the summer”.

“It’s important that people understand that this is his breakout season. He’s 19, this was his first season in Ligue 1, and for him to now go and get this move is huge, and I really think that Newcastle are getting a hell of a player here.

“I really do feel that it could be one of the signings of the summer. I just hope that it works out for him, because he’s a good lad, he’s a good kid, he’s got bags of talent, and I really think he’s going to bring a lot to the Newcastle team.”

He also contributes at the other end, being in the top 1% of forwards in Europe’s top five leagues for interceptions.

While there may be questions about whether he could make the step up the Premier League, his age means he has time to adjust. In addition, the Magpies’ recent additions from France, such as Bruno Guimaraes and Allan Saint-Maximin, have impressed at St James’ Park.

Ekitike then has all the attributes to be an amazing signing for Newcastle.
