Dele Alli is set to return from injury for Tottenham this week; however, it is hard to see how he will make any difference to a struggling side.

A lot of Spurs fans are delighted that Alli will be back for the North London derby and it is true that he scored at the Emirates last season in the Carabao Cup, but the 23-year-old could be desperately short of match fitness.

The North London derby is always intense and throwing Alli into a game of that magnitude – after very little pre-season training – could go badly wrong.

However, it is not just this weekend where Alli could struggle – he was poor for a large part of the season last year.

Alli made 43 appearances last season and scored seven goals and set up a further eight.

Compare this to the 2017/18 season where the former MK Dons man scored a staggering 14 goals and provided 17 assists.

But it was not just goal contributions that were down for Alli last season, but his overall performances were poor, and he received criticism for not making an impact in a lot of Tottenham’s more significant games.

Tottenham have also signed Giovani Lo Celso, and Mauricio Pochettino is slowly trying to get him up to speed with the Premier League.

On Sunday he came off the bench for 30 minutes and Spurs might feel he is getting closer to a start.

The Argentine international can play anywhere in midfield, but he is better playing off the main striker – which is usually Alli’s position.

This means that even when Alli is fully fit, he could be dropped for Lo Celso.

A lot of Tottenham fans are excited to see Alli return, but he will have to find his form from the 2017/18 season or he could be in for another mediocre year.
