Tam McManus has claimed on the PLZ podcast that Celtic should have signed Luton Town midfielder Allan Campbell last summer.

The 23-year-old was available last season after his contract with Motherwell expired, but was picked up by the Hatters.

The Glasgow-born midfielder has since gone on to make 35 appearances in the Championship this season, contributing to the Bedfordshire club reaching the playoff final.

No one else in his side has made more tackles per game on average than the former Scotland U21 international, and his performances in England has led to ex-Hibernian forward Tam McManus to question whether The Hoops could have benefitted from signing him.

“I looked at the boy Allan Campbell when he left Motherwell. I thought Celtic should have signed him, he’s been player of the year at Luton, he’s been absolutely outstanding in the playoffs. He’s a player for me who Celtic should be looking at.”

TIF’s thoughts on Tam McManus’ comments

Campbell was highly rated at his former club, with former manager Graham Alexander calling the 5 foot 9 midfield general a “shining example” after he made 150 appearances for The Well.

“Without trying to sound like his dad, I love him to bits, he’s everything that a professional footballer should be.

“His dedication to the game, to his team, what he puts in, he gets out, and he should be a shining example for every pro that sees him work, really.

“He’s highly rated, he plays week in, week out, he’s always there, but it’s because of the work he does away from the pitch on a match-day, and whatever he achieves in the game he will certainly earn.”

In his final year for the Steelmen he averaged more tackles per game than any other player with over 15 appearances.

However, going forward, Campbell made fewer shots, key passes, and dribbles per game than David Turnbull, Callum McGregor, and Tomas Rogic, the midfielders that have featured the most for The Bhoys this season.

Considering that Celtic then signed Matt O’Riley and Reo Hatate in January, Ange Postecoglou’s side did not need to buy Campbell last summer.
