Celtic’s quest to sign Kilmarnock full-back Greg Taylor has taken a twist, according to the Daily Record

Taylor also has interest from English League One side Sunderland and the battle for the players looks likely to go down to the wire.

Celtic are still on the hunt for a left-back but it was previously said that they wouldn’t match Kilmarnock’s £3million asking price.

However, the Hoops are also tracking Birger Meling of Rosenborg, who they recently sent a scout to watch the 24-year-old Norwegian.

What’s the story?

Taylor has been linked with Celtic for a while, but he now has interest from Jack Ross’ Sunderland. The £3million fee may put Celtic off. However, they are in desperate need of a left-back and Taylor’s experience of the domestic scene will be a plus for them. With Taylor only being 21, and being in and around the Scotland squad his best years are ahead of him and Celtic will be looking to take advantage of that.

Celtic will be wary of another John McGinn situation

Last summer Celtic had a similar situation to the Taylor one. But it was for Hibs’ John McGinn. Celtic ended up being beaten to his signature by Aston Villa and McGinn has gone from strength to strength. He’s won promotion to the English Premier League and he was recently linked with a move to Man United on the back of his performances for Villa. So, in terms of getting the Taylor deal over the line, it’s not far-fetched that Celtic look at the McGinn situation and end up paying the money Kilmarnock are looking for, especially as they will have a good young prospect filling in the role vacated by Kieran Tierney.

Furthermore, Celtic’s need will heighten after Bolingoli has failed to impress in his nine appearances for the Hoops so far.
