Aston Villa are expected to sign a left-back in the upcoming transfer window, according to Gregg Evans of The Athletic.

The Villa correspondent was speaking on the 1874 podcast about what moves Steven Gerrard’s side could potentially make in the summer.

Gerrard has already added Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara to his squad, as well as the permanent signing of Philippe Coutinho for £17m from Barcelona, but this should only be the start of what could be a huge summer for the side from the second city.

The club are also well-known to be searching for additions at centre-back with James Tarkowski, Calvin Bassey and Diego Carlos all being linked with moves to Villa Park this summer.

The Villains upgraded their left-back department back in January, when they signed Everton’s Lucas Digne for £25m, leaving Matt Targett to go to Newcastle on loan for the remainder of the season.

But it seems that Gerrard has been unconvinced by Digne’s injury record since arriving at the club in January, with the club seemingly prepared to dip into the market for another left-sided full-back.

“[Villa will be looking at] a left-back definitely,” said Evans.

“Yeah, they’re looking at bringing in another addition at left-back.”

Our thoughts on Evans’ comments

We think it will surprise but please a lot of Villa fans that the club are looking at another left-back, with it being no secret that the defence was the weak link in both Dean Smith’s and Steven Gerrard’s side in the season just gone.

It may be more likely that another left-back is coming in, simply as cover to Digne who, despite his injury issues, has had a relatively solid season since joining Villa, with an average SofaScore rating of 6.94 for the Premier League season and notching up four assists as per FBref.

He is unlikely to be replaced, with the club having shelved £25m for him in the winter.

It is more likely that he may replace Targett, who may move back to Newcastle on a permanent deal this summer.

On the face of it, we think that another left-back with potential could do no harm to Villa’s prospects, and would only enhance Gerrard’s options for his squad next season.
