Aston Villa are looking at the possibility of securing the signature of Anderlecht left-back Sergio Gómez this summer.
What’s the word?
Steven Gerrard is believed to be looking for a young left-back with the potential to grow as a backup to Lucas Digne, and may turn his attention to the Spain U21 international, with their interest in Bologna left-back Aaron Hickey having cooled.
The £9m-rated man would likely be Villa’s fifth signing of the summer window, with Philippe Coutinho, Boubacar Kamara and Diego Carlos having already signed, whilst loanee goalkeeper Robin Olsen seems to be edging closer towards a permanent move to Villa Park.
Ideal signing for Gerrard
The Spaniard has had an interesting career so far, having moved from Espanyol to Barcelona as a youth prospect, before making the transfer to German giants Borussia Dortmund in 2018.
Having been deployed as an attacking midfielder/winger whilst in the youth ranks at Barcelona, Gómez had been thought of as the “long-term heir to Iniesta” according to journalist Ronan Murphy when reporting on his arrival in Dortmund.
He joined Anderlecht in 2021, having only made three senior appearances for Der BVB via a loan spell at Huesca, but it is in Belgium where the La Masia product has flourished and found his new role at left-back.
The 21-year-old has found the back of the net five times in his time in Belgium and has provided 11 assists according to FBref, which is an extremely impressive amount for a defensive player.
And it is likely that this is where he would be deployed should he join Aston Villa, with the West Midlands side actively searching for a back-up left-back, with Matt Targett seemingly surplus to requirements after a loan spell at Newcastle this season.
In Digne, Villa have a full-back well known for getting up and down the flank and providing attacking returns, and Gómez looks set to be a like-for-like for the Frenchman, having enjoyed a productive attacking return at Anderlecht this year.
The Spanish U21 international has also already proven he is capable of playing out wide or in an attacking midfield slot, which may attract Gerrard to the former Dortmund man even more so, with his versatility no doubt being a big plus point.
Villa might be eager to get this deal over the line as quickly as possible, as Gómez’s performances and versatility suggest that he won’t be short of European suitors this summer.
Given Gerrard’s reliance on Borna Barisic and James Tavernier at Rangers, signing someone of Gomez’s once-touted potential could be hugely exciting news for the Villa boss and thus, something of a dream summer signing alongside Carlos and Kamara.
