Real Betis midfielder Nabil Fekir has finally lifted the lid on his unsuccessful transfer to Liverpool in 2018.

The Frenchman, who won the World Cup with France last summer, was on the verge of signing for the Merseyside club in what was rumoured to be a £53m from Lyon after the international tournament.

For reasons that are still not confirmed, the French club announced (via The Telegraph) that the deal was off and that Fekir was to return to France and continue preparations for the season.

During an interview with L’Equipe, he said that he was stunned to find out that Liverpool decided not to sign him after he had completed his medical. He stated that “an excuse needed to be found” when he was told that it was because of previous knee injuries that he had.
