Manchester United are reportedly interested in Villareal centre back Pau Torres, who favours a move to the club.

The Lowdown: Lots of competition

Torres garnered huge praise for his role in guiding Villareal to the semi-finals of the Champions League, the furthest they had gone since 2004.

The 25-year-old has been courted by several clubs who have been impressed with his defensive capabilities, but coolness with the ball at his feet. Chelsea, Manchester City and Spurs have all been linked with the defender.

However, it seems that the £45m-rated monster is ready to make his decision following a number of tabled bids.

The Latest: Player has made his decision

According to Spanish publication cadeneser.com, Villareal have received another €50m (£43m) proposal from both Manchester United and Spurs, but the player seems intent on moving to the Red Devils.

Last summer, the Yellow Submarine received a similar bid from Spurs, but it was Torres who declined the proposal.

However, after Villareal only managed a seventh-placed finish in the league and therefore secured European Conference for next season, the Spanish international wants to move to a club with ambitions of Champions League places.

The Verdict: Get him signed

With the bulk of the Red Devils’ issues this season stemming from the back, a marquee signing of a fine left-footed centre back could be just what Ten Hag needs to start his revolution the right way.

Boasting a SofaScore rating of 7.09, only bettered by Gerard Moreno and Dani Parejo within the Villareal squad, Torres has impressed greatly this season.

Former Premier League striker Kevin Campbell gave the defender his seal of approval, labelling him a “brilliant player” following his performance against Liverpool.

His solidity at the back would be a welcome addition to the Red Devils’ leaky backline, whilst he also possesses the ability to move to ball quickly from defence to attack.

He sits in the 99th percentile for dribbles completed per 90, and inside the 90th percentile for both progressive passes and carries per 90, compared to other centre backs. It’s no wonder Torres been lauded as an “extraordinary talent” by his ex-coach Javi Calleja to The Athletic.

Offering balance, a strong presence at the back, and the ability to defend on the front foot, Torres would be the perfect addition to Ten Hag’s new-look United.
