Leeds United have made initial contact with Liverpool for Japanese midfielder Takumi Minamino, who is thought to be highly sought after.

The Lowdown: Business done early

With the Brenden Aaronson deal all but completed, it is clear that Victor Orta wants his business done sooner rather than later.

Leeds recorded a remarkable 2-1 victory on the final day of the Premier League season at Brentford, which guaranteed their place in the division.

With their top-flight status secure, it appears that business has swiftly changed to improving the team to ensure they will not be in this position again. The Japanese international, who has enjoyed a fantastic season in the cup competitions for the Reds, could be one of a few early summer deals for the Whites.

The Latest: A few clubs circling

According to La Lazio Siamo Noi (via Sport Witness), the £10.8m-rated ace is ready to leave Liverpool after finding “little space” under Jurgen Klopp.

Leeds will face competition from Lazio for the attackers’ signature, but the initial fee quoted is reportedly “high for them”. This could be where the financial muscle of the Premier League gives Leeds a boost. Inter Milan are also said to have an interest.

Having stayed in the Premier League, which was naturally their top objective, Leeds can now turn their focus to upgrades. However, it still remains to be seen “whether or not they [Leeds] will convert this first contact into something more serious”.

The Verdict: The sooner the better

After a barren January transfer window, which saw Leeds’ squad left incredibly bare, tying up new deals quickly to improve the squad is a no-brainer for Marsch and Orta.

The tricky £75k-per-week attacker boasts an impressive cup record this season, with eight goal contributions in nine games. With just one Premier League start, perhaps if given a proper platform he could turn this season’s cup success into league accomplishments for the Whites.

Hailed as “outstanding” by both Klopp and his assistant Pep Lijnders, it is clear that Minamino has earned the respect of his peers at Liverpool.

But with game time limited and potential to become a bigger fish in the Leeds United pond, it could make sense for both club and player to get the deal done as soon as possible.
