Toby Alderweireld joined Tottenham in 2015 from Atletico Madrid for a reported price of £14.40m.

The Belgian had impressed in the 2014/15 campaign whilst on loan at Southampton.

Since joining Spurs, Alderweireld has played in 159 games and formed one of the best centre-back partnerships in the Premier League with his compatriot, Jan Vertonghen.

Although he’s become a very important player for Spurs, speculation of wanting to leave Tottenham has been ever-present in the last few seasons after he rejected contract offers from Spurs.

Alderweireld’s contract has a £25m release clause and although there had been talks with Italian side AS Roma, nothing was agreed and the centre-back has said that he’s focused on playing for Spurs:

“In football, everything can go quick but my focus is on Spurs and to be ready for the start of the season,”

“The manager knows that I’m committed to the team and to the club. Today I was made captain which shows the manager’s trust in me.”

This release clause expires today and reports suggest that if no-one meets Alderweireld’s release clause, his asking price will go up to £40m.

Manchester United have been credited with an interest in the Belgian but Harry Maguire remains their top target.

A lot of Spurs fans are still fearing the worst when it comes to losing Alderweired and they’ll hope he’s still a Spurs player when the transfer window shuts:
